Those in the theater industry may have read my extensive quotes in the online edition of American Theater. The upshot was that knowledge equals leverage. The more you know (or your lawyer knows) about industry standards, the better you will fare in that industry. The more seasoned your negotiation skills (or those of your lawyer), the better you will fare on a specific deal.
In October, I will be guest lecturing for Judy Gordon’s six-week “Producing in the Theater” seminar, speaking about authors’ rights and what you might reasonably expect of your production counsel. If you do not know Judy from her productions, then you might have seen her caricature hanging in Sardi’s restaurant. Her course addresses all the key areas of the producing process from both an overview and nuts-and-bolts perspective. Spaces go quickly, especially with people taking the course multiple times.
